This apprenticeship covers a range of occupations within the hospitality and catering sector; one of the largest industries in the country. Hospitality and catering covers work in restaurants, hotels and holiday accommodation, cafes, pubs, and contract caterers – it also supplies other industries with food and drink. Schools, colleges, hospitals and large businesses nearly always have canteens and catering staff too.

To reflect the many career options on offer, this Apprenticeship has several pathways.

If the apprentice is interested in working ‘front of house’, they could train as waiting staff and learn how to serve customers, or they could train in beverage services – one of the fastest growing sub-sectors.

Suitable job roles include:

  • Chef/cook
  • Supervisor of hospitality outlet
  • Waiter

The range of units includes:

  • Maintain food safety when storing, holding and serving food
  • Give customers a positive impression of yourself and your organisation
  • Clean drink dispense lines
  • Prepare and serve hot drinks using specialist equipment
  • Produce Basic Fish Dishes
  • Prepare and present food for cold presentation
  • Produce basic rice, pulse and grain dishes
  • Use of different chemicals and equipment in housekeeping

In addition to completing work based assessments apprentices will complete a knowledge certificate and, depending on previous qualifications, Functional Skills in English and Maths. The knowledge certificate may include:

  • Cleaning and Servicing of Hospitality Areas
  • Departure of Customers
  • Principles of Preparing and Clearing Areas for Table Service
