Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, students will understand how to work in end of life care, including how to plan care and provide support to manage pain and discomfort.

Course content

  • Understanding how to work in end of life care:
    • Different attitudes to death and dying
    • The varying approaches (and their individual aims) to end of life care
    • Support services available to people undertaking such a role
  • Care planning in end of life care:
    • The holistic approach to end of life care
    • Person-centred assessment
    • Care planning, considering the many needs of individuals nearing the end of life
  • Understanding how to provide support to manage pain and discomfort:
    • Providing support for managing pain and discomfort
    • How to minimise pain through a range of different techniques
    • Approaches to managing pain.
  • End of life care and dementia:
    • The impact dementia can have on an individual's end of life care
    • How to support those individuals, as well as their family and close friends
  • Understanding the role of the care worker in time of death:
    • The role of a care worker around the time of death of an individual
    • How to support an individual
    • How to care for a deceased individual
    • Existing legislation around this subject
  • Understanding loss and grief in end of life care:
    • Understanding the complex nature of loss and grief
    • How to support people following bereavement
    • How to best manage their feelings of loss and grief

Course requirements

Candidates will require the following equipment for distance learning:

  • PC or laptop with a microphone and speakers (a webcam is preferred but not essential)
  • Access to the internet and web browser application (e.g. Google Chrome)
  • An email account for file sharing
