Course overview

This qualification aims to give fundamental training to new starters, or to update existing employees’ training. It covers the essential areas of an induction, such as rights and responsibilities, manual handling, health and safety, fire safety and DSE risk assessment. This programme can also be personalised to your business.

Upon completion of this induction essentials training, delegates could go on to study for the Level 2 Certificate in Principles of Team Leading.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, students will understand employer and employee rights and responsibilities, health and safety, fire safety, how to carry out a display screen equipment (DSE) assessment and manual handling.

Course content

  • Rights and responsibilities:
    • The rights and responsibilities of both an employee and an employer
    • Employment law and the Employment Rights Act
  • Health and safety:
    • Employers' and employees' duties relating to health, safety and welfare
    • The requirements for training and competence
    • Communicating health and safety information
  • Fire safety principles:
    • How to identify different causes of fires in the workplace
    • Hazards during and after a fire
    • The characteristics of fire and smoke spread
  • DSE risk assessment:
    • The reasons for conducting DSE risk assessments
    • Problems that may occur when working with DSE
    • Legal requirements that come under health and safety legislation
  • Manual handling:
    • Efficient and safe manual handling principles
    • Moving a load manually on your own
    • Good handling techniques
    • Using manual handling aids and equipment
    • Ill health associated with incorrect manual handling
    • Employers' and employees' duties and the possible consequences for non-compliance with health and safety requirements

The induction programme is split into five core areas, but it is adaptable should you wish to cater to your needs with a range of additional bolt-ons. These include:

  • Safeguarding
  • First aid
  • Leadership and management
