Course overview

This qualification will provide an awareness of a range of common health conditions which will then encourage students to move on to further and more in-depth study of specific health conditions.

Within this qualification, students will learn about cardiovascular disease, stroke, arthritis, physical disabilities and Parkinson’s disease.

Suitable for

This course is suitable for students aged 14 and over. It is ideal for anyone who currently works in, or would like to work in, the education and health and social care sectors.

Learning outcomes

Students will understand how to contribute to monitoring the health of individuals affected by health conditions, understand cardiovascular disease and understand physical disability. They will also learn about stroke awareness, arthritis awareness and Parkinson’s disease awareness.

Course content

  • Understanding how to contribute to monitoring the health of individuals affected by health conditions:
    • How to accurately monitor the health of individuals living with an existing condition
    • Patient observation
    • Recording patient information pertaining and reporting this information to the relevant parties
    • The responses required should there be changes to an individual’s condition
  • Understanding cardiovascular disease:
    • The cardiovascular system
    • Different forms of cardiovascular disease including their signs, symptoms, causes and risk factors
    • The effects such a condition has on a patient’s daily life
    • Treatment and management options available
  • Stroke awareness:
    • The different types of stroke
    • Warning signs and symptoms
    • The effects of a stroke on an individual
    • The swift response required in the event of an emergency
    • The wide range of support that is available following a stroke
  • Arthritis awareness:
    • The different types of arthritis
    • Causes, signs and symptoms
    • How to best treat the condition in order to allow those affected the ability to enjoy their day-to-day life
  • Understanding physical disability:
    • How to provide support to individuals with physical disabilities
    • How to help them to effectively manage their disability and their ability to maintain their independence
  • Parkinson’s disease awareness:
    • How Parkinson’s develops and its underlying causes
    • Treatment options
    • Support services and strategies available for those managing the condition

Course requirements

Candidates will require the following equipment for distance learning:

  • PC or laptop with a microphone and speakers (a webcam is preferred but not essential)
  • Access to the internet and web browser application (e.g. Google Chrome)
  • An email account for file sharing
