Course overview

This 10-week course will provide a complete beginner’s introduction to Microsoft Office, including guidance on programmes such as Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint.

Students can choose to study this part-time course in one of three sessions: Monday: 9.30am – 3.00pm Wednesday: 6.00pm – 8.30pm Friday: 9.30am – 3.00pm

This course is perfect for those who wish to boost their digital literacy. It is ideal for those who are currently unemployed and looking to increase their employability prospects by widening their digital skillset, or those who are employed and wish to upskill.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion, students will be able to confidently execute basic commands of Microsoft Office programmes.

Course content

  • Session one:
    • Introduction
    • Looking at common features across all applications (file handling, quick access toolbar, help systems)
    • An introduction to Excel with basic functions
  • Session two:
    • More advanced formula and functions (formatting, conditional formatting)
    • Chart production
  • Session three:
    • Conditional commands, percentages and more advanced chart-making
    • Basics on using tables and charts in other Office applications (Word and PowerPoint)
  • Session four:
    • Word and PowerPoint: what they do, common functions, interface similarities and differences
    • Using Word for effective document creation
    • Look at formatting, styles and how styles can be used to support other functions
  • Session five:
    • File and printing functions, how to use them effectively and how many of these options are available throughout the Office application range
  • Session six:
    • The purpose of PowerPoint, its interface, most used features and functions
    • Easy ways to make presentations more interesting
  • Session seven:
    • More advanced features of PowerPoint and specific printer functions for presentations and outline functions
  • Session eight:
    • Outlook key functions and features: email, calendar, adding attachments, the CC, BCC, forward, reply and reply all functions
  •  Session nine:
    • Outlook tasks
    • Integration with Teams, scheduling calls, sharing the screen, chat functions
  • Session ten:
    • Teams additional functions
    • Integrating apps for collaborative working.

Course requirements

This course can be delivered remotely or in a classroom environment, to suit your requirements.

To attend remotely, you will require the following equipment:

  • PC or laptop with a microphone and speakers (webcam is preferred but not essential)
  • Access to the internet and web browser application (e.g. Google Chrome)
  • An email account for file sharing

During the course, students will be required to demonstrate the skills they have learnt by delivering a number of short coaching and training sessions. In preparation for this, they must consider the subject areas of the sessions they will deliver before attending this course (our tutor can support this).
